Collecting the right plot data makes the difference between a sloppy survey and a successful site visit. In this course you will learn how to get great data every time by choosing the best plot design and the right variables to record to meet your objectives. You will be instructed on the tools that ecologists use to take measures of the terrain and how you can combine data, specimens, and photographs to compile an accurate and detailed picture of the plant species and site conditions you encountered.

Skills Learned

Gathering field data using a digital field form

Basic understanding of terrain and landscape features

Gathering abiotic site data using basic tools such as a compass a clinometer (e.g., slope, aspect, and slope position)

Installation of standard vegetation plots, including techniques and standards for site and plot photography

Standards for collecting plant specimens
